The Fay Marles Scholarship is awarded to applicants wishing to undertake graduate research studies at the University who are of Indigenous Australian descent and/or who have had their tertiary studies adversely affected by personal circumstances.

The University of Melbourne offers up to eight Fay Marles Scholarships each year.
Benefits and conditions
Fay Marles Scholarship benefits are similar to those provided by the Melbourne Research Scholarship and include a:
a living allowance of $22,500 per annum (2010 rate)
a Relocation Grant of $2,000 awarded to students who are moving from interstate in order to study at the University of Melbourne or $3,000 awarded to those who are moving from overseas
a Thesis Allowance of up to $420 (2010 rate) for masters by research and up to $840 (2010 rate) for PhD and other doctorate by research candidates, and
paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.

Eligibility criteria
1. Applicants must plan have applied for, or be currently enrolled in, a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne.
*FMSs cannot be awarded to support studies towards a graduate coursework degree, graduate diploma or postgraduate certificate.
2. Applicants seeking an FMS must have completed tertiary studies that are at least equivalent to a 4-year Australian Honours degree with a minimum grade average of a high H2A (ie. upper second class average which equates to 78-79% at the University of Melbourne.)
3. Applicants must provide evidence showing that they meet one or more of the following criteria:
•they are of Indigenous Australian descent, and/or
•their tertiary studies have been adversely affected by one or more of the following:
•illness
•disability
•family responsibilities (eg. child bearing or rearing, sustained care of a dependent family member, etc.), or
•traumatic event(s) that were beyond their control.
4. FMSs are not awarded to applicants who:
•cannot provide evidence of circumstances to support their FMS application
•have already completed a course deemed to be at the same level or higher level than the course for which they are seeking scholarship support
•have previously received a HRS, MRS, PES, Scholarship for Women with Career Interruptions or a Postgraduate Scholarship for Indigenous Australians
•as a result of previous candidature and/or prior scholarship, have a maximum tenure of less than 12 months
•have already been awarded or later receive another equivalent award, scholarship or salary for the studies for which they seek a FMS. An "equivalent" award is regarded as one greater than 75% of the base FMS rate (75% of the base 2010 FMS rate = $16,875), or
•are awarded an APA or MRS before the FMS selection meeting in January.
Selection criteria
Selection of the FMS is primarily based on three main criteria: personal circumstance, academic merit, and strength of the supporting documents.

Once an online scholarship application has been completed applicants must submit to the Melbourne Scholarships Office the documents described below by 31 October.
Required documents
Applicants must submit three (3) complete sets (one original or certified and two copies) of the documents listed on the document checklist and the following additional documents with their scholarship application by 31 October (or the next working day if 31 October falls on a weekend).
If the required documents are not provided by the closing date or do not clearly address the requirements outlined below, the application will be deemed ineligible.
1. A statement (maximum of 1 page) that explains how you meet the eligibility requirements listed above. Specifically, this statement should indicate that you are of Australian Indigenous descent and/or show how and when your personal circumstances adversely affected your tertiary studies.
Closing date and timelines
Online scholarship applications should be submitted by 11:59pm (AEST) 31 October at the latest. Supporting documents are also due on 31 October, or the following business day if 31 October falls on a weekend. We are unable to consider late or incomplete applications.

Fay Marles Scholarship (FMS) at University of Melbourne 2012-2013
Australia:Information Systems Scholarship Programme 2012-2013 for International Students
The Information Systems Scholarship Programme is available to students interested in Computing Science, Applied Information Technology or related computing fields in Curtin Business School.
WHAT THIS SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDES
The scholarship is valued at $5,000 in total and will be awarded to students over the period of the original course that the scholarship was offered, for example if it is a three year course they will receive $2,000 in their first year and then $1,500 in the subsequent years.
The Scholarship will be available for the normal expected duration of the initial undergraduate course offered to the successful Scholarship recipient. For example, if the normal expected duration is 600 credits of study, the Scholarship will cover 600 credit points only.
Once the Information Systems Scholarship Programme has been accepted, the scholarship will commence from the first semester of study.
The cash payment of the Scholarship will be paid to the student’s nominated bank account normally in two instalments (pro rata if part-time) per year. Payments occur post census date (Semester 1 approx mid-end April) and in second semester payment will occur post census date (approx mid-end Sept). If the scholarship is commended in Semester 2 then there will be one payment.

Curtin Business School courses have a common first year, however to maintain eligibility for this scholarship a student must enrol in Unit 310410 Systems Analysis and Design 251, in the first year of study. If this unit is not enrolled in and passed, the scholarship will be cancelled. If the student is eligible for an exemption from this unit, other unit(s) will be identified which the student must pass in 2011/2012.
Students must enrol and remain enrolled in one of the above courses to continue receiving the scholarship.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria to be considered for an Information Systems Scholarship Programme:
• Be an international student and hold a valid Student Visa – Higher Education (Subclass 573)
• Have received a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) into an eligible undergraduate business degree at Curtin University in 2011
• Commencing the first semester of their first undergraduate degree at Curtin University of Technology in semester 1, 2011.
APPLICATION PROCESS
1. An applicant must submit a completed application form with supporting documents attached by 4:30pm on Friday 3rd December, 2010, to the Scholarships Office at the Bentley campus. Application forms are available on the Scholarships website.
Documents must be certified copies, for details about certification go to http://scholarships.curtin.edu.au/students/certification.cfm. No other copies (including faxes) will be accepted
2. Applications will be assessed by a selection panel using the following criteria.
• Academic merit
• Responses to questions in application
• Receive an offer of a place into an eligible undergraduate degree at Curtin University in 2011
The Scholarship(s) will be awarded if there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
3. All applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application.
4. In order to accept the Scholarship a recipient will be requested to return a signed Terms and Conditions document and provide bank details.
5. If a recipient wants to defer their scholarship they will need to complete the necessary paperwork that will be included with their offer of a scholarship.
6. Once the Scholarship has been accepted, the Scholarship will commence from the first semester of study.
7. An Information Systems Scholarship Programme is not transferable to another university or degree.
ENROLMENT
The Scholarship is available for the normal expected duration of the initial course offered to the successful Scholarship recipient. For example, if the normal expected undergraduate degree duration is 600 credits of study, the Scholarship will cover 600 credit points only. Any study that is taken over and above the normal expected duration will be at the student’s expense. No extensions beyond the normal duration of study will be considered except if a recipient continues to an honours year. Recipients will need to contact the Scholarships Office for approval of the extension of their Scholarship.
Unless there are exceptional circumstances such as but not limited to medical or family reasons students must:
• maintain a full time study load of a minimum of 100 credits per semester
• maintain a Course Weighted Average of at least 70.00
• pass all units attempted;
Scholarship continuity is subject to meeting satisfactory academic progress as detailed above. Progress will be assessed at the end of each study period. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, a recipient with unsatisfactory progress or who breaches the Scholarship conditions shall be ineligible to retain the Scholarship. Exceptional circumstances must be forwarded to and shall be at the discretion of the Manager, Scholarships Office.
CHANGES TO ENROLMENT
If a recipient intends to do any of the following they must also apply in writing to the Scholarships Office (scholarships@curtin.edu.au) for approval prior to the change.
Change from full time enrolment: The Scholarships Office will advise how the change will affect your scholarship.
Change of course: The Scholarships Office will advise how the change of course will affect your scholarship.
Leave of absence: The maximum period of leave is 12 months.
Withdrawal from course: A student who withdraws from their course of study prior to census date will become ineligible for continuation of the Scholarship. A student who withdraws from studies after the census date, or has been terminated from studies, will be required to repay to the University the stipend awarded for that study period.

Postdoctoral Fellowships 2012-2013 at University of Sydney
The United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney invites applications for its 2011-2012 class of Postdoctoral Fellows.
The fellowship program, directed by Professor Margaret Levi of the United States Studies Centre and the University of Washington, is designed to bring to Sydney a cohort of the world's rising scholarly leaders working on the United States in the humanities, social sciences and related professional disciplines.
The Centre will award up to six Fellowships for a 12-month period commencing on 1 September 2011. Fellowships are open to scholars who have a PhD awarded no earlier than 1 January 2004 as well as doctoral students who will be awarded their PhDs by the end of 2011.
Fellows are expected to be in residence and to complete a major research project as well as to engage with students and scholars in Sydney and around Australia during the fellowship period. Salaries commence from AUD $86,269 and will be commensurate with experience and current employment.
Eligibility
Fellowships will be awarded to scholars working on the United States from Social Sciences, Humanities, Public Policy, Management, Law, and related disciplines and professional schools.
Applicants must have a PhD awarded no earlier than 1 January 2004 and no later than 31 December 2011.
Assessment Criteria
Excellence will be the primary criterion. Equal weight will be given to the quality of the proposed research project and the applicant’s accomplishments. Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and relevance of the proposed research as determined by the United States Studies Centre.

Campbell Fellowship for Women Scholar-Practitioners from Developing Countries,USA
One six-month fellowship is available for a female social scientist from a developing nation, either a PhD candidate or post-doctoral scholar, whose work addresses women’s economic and social empowerment in that nation. The goal of the program is twofold: to advance the scholarly careers of women social scientists from the developing world, and to support research that identifies causes of gender inequity in the developing world and that proposes practical solutions for promoting women’s economic and social empowerment.
In addition to a $4,500/month stipend and housing and office space on the SAR campus, the Campbell Fellow receives travel, shipping, and library resource funds; health insurance; and the support of a mentoring committee of established scholar-practitioners.
The following criteria guide SAR's selection of the Campbell Fellow:
Academic Discipline: Applicants should be pursuing research in one of the social sciences: anthropology, economics, education, geography, history, law, linguistics, political science, psychology, social work, or sociology, or in an interdisciplinary field that incorporates two or more of these disciplines.
Research Topic: Projects that identify causes of and/or solutions to gender inequity in the developing world, and thus contribute to women’s social and economic empowerment, will be favored. Sample topics include education and socialization of girls; globalization and the economic status of women; policies and practices toward family, reproduction, and women’s health; impacts of international and civil conflict on women; women’s roles in resolving such conflicts or sustaining civil society; media representations of women and the formation of ideologies of gender; the practice and process of gender-based development; and women in science and technology. SAR will select fellows on the strength of their clearly stated intention to serve their communities and countries of origin.
English Fluency: To facilitate full engagement in the SAR intellectual community, applicants must demonstrate their fluency in English, such as through their record of professional interaction in written and spoken English.
