Africa Initiative Research Exchange Program for Candian and African Students 2012-2013

The Africa Initiative exchange program supports short-term academic placements for Africans and Canadians undertaking research on Africa.

The program is building capacity by giving bright, highly-motivated students and scholars an opportunity to discover and impart new learning in a cross-cultural experience.

Supported research covers five thematic areas – conflict resolution, energy, food security, health, and migration, with special attention to the cross-cutting issue of climate change.

Participants have the opportunity to further their research through the utilization of on-the-ground resources and research materials, as well as to develop international networks with fellow researchers and practitioners conducting work in a relevant field of study.

Research results are presented and disseminated through a variety of public channels.

Current programming under the Africa Initiative Exchange Program is divided into two streams:

1. Short-Term Academic Placements for Africans in Canada

The program is available to graduate students enrolled at Makerere University in Uganda.
Participants are hosted at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University and benefit from close ties with researchers at The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI).
The program is offered to up to five students per academic semester and each student spends four months in Canada conducting research and contributing to the Africa Initiative’s programs.

2. Africa Initiative Graduate Research Grant

The Africa Initiative’s Graduate Research Grant is designed to support relevant and unique research on Africa conducted by graduate students enrolled in a Canadian university.
The grant is offered to up to fifteen recipients each year. Each recipient spends as many as three months in Africa conducting research funded by the program.
Current programming is only open to Canadian students.

Additional programming for African students will be announced in 2012.

Erasmus Mundus MARES Scholarship 2012-2013

MARES is a three-year world-class Joint Doctoral Programme offered by a consortium of 24 partner institutions (11 full partners and 13 associated members) originating from 14 countries.
Ghent University (Belgium) is the coordinator of MARES.
The MARES Doctoral Programme was approved for funding by EU in July 2010. First Doctoral candidates will start in the programme from September 2011 onwards. Applications for doctoral candidates will be open from 16 November 2010 onwards.
All MARES doctoral candidates will study with two of the partner institutions and will be awarded a joint Ph.D. degree (Doctorate in Marine Sciences).
In connection with the annual call for applications, the MARES doctoral programme will publish a catalogue of MARES PhD research topics within the applied scientific fields of Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation.

Niehaus Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Regional Political Economy 2012-2013

This fellows program is targeted at developing a new generation of scholars able to analyze and make policy recommendations about the regional political economy in the Middle East, East, South, or Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America. The Center invites candidates with a background in economics, political science, contemporary history, sociology, law, business, and other disciplines bearing on the study of markets, politics, and economic development, focusing on the regions of the Middle East, East, South, or Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America to apply. Scholarly work should explore the ways in which the politics within and between a set of countries intersect with natural resource endowments, market conditions, technological and physical infrastructure, and cultural biases to explain existing patterns of economic development and to promote higher levels of development more effectively. Selected candidates will be required to be in residence for the duration of the fellowship (September 1, 2011-July 1, 2012
Applicants are required to hold a PhD in one of the above mentioned disciplines.

Stanford University Postdoctoral Fellowship in Asia Health Policy

The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University is pleased to announce a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Asian Health Policy for 2011-2012. The Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in the Center's Asia Health Policy Program while completing his or her own research on contemporary health or healthcare in two or more countries of the Asia-Pacific, including the social and economic implications of population aging. We welcome applications from junior scholars (Ph.D. conferred after 2008 and by August 30, 2011)) from a variety of disciplines, such as demography, sociology, political science, economics, anthropology, public policy, law, health services research and related fields.

Stipend

The Fellowship carries a stipend between $40,000 and $45,000 depending on experience, with $2500 for research expenses. The Fellow will be expected to be in residence for at least three academic quarters, beginning fall 2011. He or she is required to present research findings in a Center seminar and to release at least one working paper in the AHPP working paper series on health and demographic change in the Asia-Pacific (http://asiahealthpolicy.stanford.edu/publications/list/0/0/4/). SWEA International Scholarship 2012-2013

Swesub Women’s Educational Association International, Inc., is pleased to announce its annual scholarship of U.S. $ 10,000 (ten thousand U.S. dollars).

Candidates for SWEA International’s grant for research in the Swedish language, literature and society should be a well qualified graduate who study at a university outside of Sweden is permanently resident abroad.

It is essential that the candidate has registered his subject for his thesis.

China/UNESCO-The Great Wall Fellowship 2012-2013

China/UNESCO — the Great Wall Fellowship program is a full scholarship program set up by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China (hereinafter referred to as MOE) for candidates recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). MOE entrusts China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC) to manage the recruitment and carry out the routine management of this scholarship program.

This program sponsors general scholars and senior scholars, and in principle the courses will be taught in English with duration up to one year. Candidates who choose programs taught in Chinese are required to get the approval from both CSC and UNESCO on application. With the approval, their scholarship duration will be extended automatically for another year.

Application

Applicants shall apply to the National Commission for UNESCO in their home countries between January and April, 2011.

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health.
2. Education background and age limit:
- Applicants for general scholar program must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies and be under the age of 45.

Campbell Fellowship for Women Scholar-Practitioners from Developing Countries,USA

One six-month fellowship is available for a female social scientist from a developing nation, either a PhD candidate or post-doctoral scholar, whose work addresses women’s economic and social empowerment in that nation. The goal of the program is twofold: to advance the scholarly careers of women social scientists from the developing world, and to support research that identifies causes of gender inequity in the developing world and that proposes practical solutions for promoting women’s economic and social empowerment.

In addition to a $4,500/month stipend and housing and office space on the SAR campus, the Campbell Fellow receives travel, shipping, and library resource funds; health insurance; and the support of a mentoring committee of established scholar-practitioners.

The following criteria guide SAR's selection of the Campbell Fellow:

Citizenship: Applicants must be nationals of developing countries that are currently eligible to borrow from the World Bank.

Academic Discipline: Applicants should be pursuing research in one of the social sciences: anthropology, economics, education, geography, history, law, linguistics, political science, psychology, social work, or sociology, or in an interdisciplinary field that incorporates two or more of these disciplines.

Research Topic: Projects that identify causes of and/or solutions to gender inequity in the developing world, and thus contribute to women’s social and economic empowerment, will be favored. Sample topics include education and socialization of girls; globalization and the economic status of women; policies and practices toward family, reproduction, and women’s health; impacts of international and civil conflict on women; women’s roles in resolving such conflicts or sustaining civil society; media representations of women and the formation of ideologies of gender; the practice and process of gender-based development; and women in science and technology. SAR will select fellows on the strength of their clearly stated intention to serve their communities and countries of origin.

English Fluency: To facilitate full engagement in the SAR intellectual community, applicants must demonstrate their fluency in English, such as through their record of professional interaction in written and spoken English.

USA:NEAR EAST & SOUTH ASIA (NESA) Undergraduate Scholarship 2012/2013 for International Students

The Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Program, NESA UGRAD, is a part of GLOBAL UGRAD, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State. NESA UGRAD will award scholarships to outstanding students from countries of the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia for one-year of undergraduate, non-degree studies programs in the United States at a diverse network of accredited two- and four-year institutions. Participants will be enrolled full-time and will live on-campus with an American roommate. Participants will not select host institutions and placements will not be changed. Possible fields of study include, but are not limited to, the humanities, arts, social sciences, mathematical science, natural and physical sciences,and applied science.
