University of the West of England announces Chancellor’s Scholarship to study a one year postgraduate programme. A full tuition fee scholarship will be awarded to two outstanding students to study at UWE. Recipients will be required to undertake an internship working within the International Development Office and other departments and will also be required to undertake ambassadorial activity for the University throughout the duration of the course. Applicants applying for the scholarship must have achieved the equivalent of a British 1st in their undergraduate degree. Applicants are selected based on academic merit.

A Liberian movie industry under the banner “Pillar of Fire Movie Production Inc” has launched a US$2,350.00 scholarship fund drive at the rally town market in Monrovia for its members.

The fund drive was launched at the industry’s 10th Production House Anniversaries. The Pillar of Fire Movie Production Inc. (POFMP) is one of the oldest movie production companies in Liberia, established since 2003.

The firm has produced at least seven movies and three documentaries, and is expected to launch its latest effort in the next three months. The scholarship fund drive was launched to help its less fortunate members go to school and remain there to acquire an education.

Speaking at the 10th anniversary celebration, the President of the Liberian Movie Union Sieh Thomas, said Liberia is getting better on the movie market, and encouraged those in the industry to continue their good work in advancing the entertainment industry here.

Mr. Thomas also encouraged directors and producers to remain original and stop copy foreign cultures. He urged them to promote Liberian culture through movies from Liberia, saying “We should produce movies that our parents and children can watch together, movies that can be shown in Churches and Mosques.”

He encouraged them to always be real in their script writing, stressing “You should not include things that do not exist or happened in Liberia; example, we all know that we do not go in space in Liberia, so it is not possible to go into space in your movies, and you guys should learn to act from the script you wrote.”

According to him, POFMP is the largest movie production company here 74 members therefore encouraged actors and actresses to take advantage of the international oxidation that is in the country now. He said the Liberian movies union is supportive of POFMP and is willing to pay 30% of every movie produced by the company.

The Movie Union President disclosed the Liberia Movie Union has received US$10,000 from the US$50,000 allotted by the Government of Liberia for the industry. He pledged the LIMU’s willingness to support and collaborate with the Pillar of Fire Movie Production Inc. Meanwhile, the POFMP has gowned Mr. Thomas for his good work since he ascendency to the leadership of the Liberia Movie Union.

The department conducts research and provides education at undergraduate to graduate level in mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical statistics. The number of employees is 100, of which approximately 30 are doctoral students.

Duties: The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at his/her own research education, which lasts 4 years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20 %), other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum 5 years.

The salary level is set by the university regulations.

Required qualifications: In order to be employed as a doctoral student, the candidate needs to be admitted to the research education programme, and for this, his/her potential ability to pursue the programme is decisive. The applicant should have a master’s degree in mathematics or an equivalent, or at least in all likelihood obtain such a degree no later than July 1, 2013. The candidate should have a good command of spoken and written English.

The Stockland Ervin Graf Scholarship Program

Each year, Stockland offers scholarships to high performing property undergraduates from a selection of Australian universities. The Ervin Graf Scholarship was created in 2003 in honour of the late Ervin Graf, founder of Stockland in 1952. The program continues to attract the highest calibre students across Australia.

Stockland currently partners with the University of Western Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, Curtin University, RMIT University and Bond University.

Successful recipients have the opportunity to gain insight into the day-to-day operation of the property investment and development industry. The program is designed to ensure our scholars have the flexibility to work around their study.

Scholarship Prize

The Scholarship consists of a monetary prize, currently $12,000 paid in fortnightly instalments as well as one year casual paid work experience with Stockland across a range of our businesses. Recipients work a minimum of 1 day a week through semester and up to full-time during semester breaks.

Upon completion of the scholarship recipients may be offered full-time permanent employment with Stockland, however, this is not a condition of the scholarship.

Eligibility and Applications

Students need to undertake full-time study during their scholarship year and achieve a minimum average mark of 70 across all subjects. Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident and be available to participate in paid work experience during the scholarship year.

In addition, each university involved in the program apply their own eligibility criteria to applicants. For more details, contact the respective university.

Applications open in August each year. Applications for the scholarship are required to be submitted directly to the university. Applications should include a resume, a copy of academic record, as well as a statement of career ambitions and personal aspirations.

A shortlist of applications are provided to Stockland and those students are contacted for an interview. Interviews, involving Stockland and University representatives take place in October each year. Paid casual work experience commences in early February of the following year.

The Stockland Ervin Graf Scholarship Program

Each year, The Rotary Foundation offers Rotary Peace fellowships for international students. 60 fellowships are available for master’s degree studies in the fields of international relations, sustainable development, peace studies and conflict resolution and up to 50 fellowships are offered for earning professional development certificate in peace and conflict studies. The fellowship is tenable at Rotary Peace Center University Partners that includes University of Queensland, Australia, International Christian University, Japan, Uppsala University, Sweden, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, University of Bradford, United Kingdom, Duke University & University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. Sweden : PhD position in Ecological Botany

Northern temperate and boreal peatlands constitute a major carbon store, and their carbon balance has implications for the current discussion on climate change. A large proportion of these peatlands are formed by, and dominated by Sphagnum (peat mosses). Their ability to create an environment that is wet, acid and anoxic is crucial for the development and maintenance of peatlands and for the storage of peat. Dominance is by some 20 species. Largely these are the same in Eurasia and N America, and therefore detailed knowledge of the species is applicable over the whole northern hemisphere. These species show niche differentiation along a few environmental gradients (pH, water level, light). The realized niches (patterns of occurrence in the field) are well described, but the fundamental niches representing the physiological tolerance of the species are well known only for few species.

In this project niche diversification is studied by transplant experiments covering large biogeographic, climatic and environmental ranges and including most of the dominant Sphagnum species and made with and without contact with congeneric competitors. Controlled laboratory experiments can be used for physiological tolerance measurements. In both field and laboratory experiments, responses can be growth measurements and also ecophysiological responses such as chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic capacity. To study how the niches have evolved and diversified the candidate will cooperate with our research partners at Duke University specializing in Sphagnum phylogeny. The candidate will link with on-going research on functional traits in Sphagnum in which growth and decomposition are key species components used to explain the ecological role of Sphagnum in the northern peatlands.

Candidates should have a master degree in ecology. Proficiency in English is a requirement. The candidate should have a keen interest in plant population and community ecology. Knowledge about peatlands, bryophytes and plant ecophysiology are considered as merits.

The applications should include a letter of motivation for PhD studies and for this topic, as well as a description of previous education, research interests and research experience. It should further include a CV, authorized copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, and contact information (phone, email) for at least two references. Relevant publications (including MSc thesis) should be enclosed.

The postgraduate training comprises four years of full time studies. The successful candidate will receive a postgraduate fellowship the first year (15500 SEK/month) and a postgraduate position year 2-4 (currently 24100-27500 SEK/month). The position can be combined with up to 20% of teaching assistantship, which will then prolong the position accordingly.

The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) is designed for international students who want to pursue higher education in Korean Universities. The scholarship supports Bachelor’s (4 years), Masters (2 years), and PhD (3 years) plus 1 year Korean language course.

• Research Allowance: 210,000 won for students in human and social sciences; 240,000 won for students in natural and mechanic sciences per semester

• Dissertation Printing Costs: 500,000 ~ 800,000 won for the costs related to a printing dissertation

Special Allowance for ALL students proficient in Korean language (TOPIK level 5 or 6): 100,000 won per month 

Eligibility:

Undergraduate Program

• Must be a citizen of the country to which the scholarship is offered, which also applies to the applicants’ parents

• Have graduated or will be scheduled to graduate from high school as of March 1st of the invitation year

• Must possess above 80% (out of 100%) cumulative grade point average (CGPA), or must be within the top 20% (out of 100%) in rank in high school. 

Graduate Program

• The applicant and his/her parents must hold foreign citizenships.  Applicants who hold Korean citizenship are not permitted to apply for this program.

• Applicants must be under 40 years of age as of Sep. 1st, 2012 (born after Sep. 1st, 1972).

• Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as of September 1st of the selection year.  Applicants who have enrolled in or graduated from a university in Korea are not eligible for the KGSP program. Specifically, applicants who have previously enrolled in or graduated from an undergraduate program, a master’s program, or a doctoral program in Korea cannot apply for this program.

• Applicants must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.64 on a 4.0 scale, 2.80 on a 4.3 scale, 2.91 on a 4.5 scale, or grades/marks/score of 80% or higher from the previously attended institution. If the applicant does not satisfy the above GPA requirements, he/she will be ineligible to apply to this program.
