Scholarship Description: The Department of Chemical Engineering, University College London (UCL) is seeking a Graduate Student for the experimental and numerical investigation of multiphase flows in micro- and milli-fluidic reactors. The aim of the research project is to understand interfacial transport processes and the scale-up of the involved transport coefficients in more detail, and thus to contribute to the efforts in process intensification and the translation from batch to continuous flow processes on the micro- and milli-scale. The experimental characterization is accomplished by identifying the physical mechanisms of heat and mass transfer on the micro- and milli-scale using non-invasive, laser-optical measurement techniques (particle image velocimetry (PIV), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF)). In a second step, these experimental results will be used to validate and develop predictive multiphase flow models for computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Therefore the open-source code Open FOAM will serve as a platform to develop a volume-of-fluids (VOF) based two-phase flow solver, which captures interfacial heat and mass transfer as well as chemical reactions. The obtained results will bridge the gap between the micro- and milli-scale, and will directly impact the efforts in process intensification and sustainable advanced manufacturing.

Scholarship Description:This scholarship is funded by the Centre for Road Safety, Transport for NSW and an ARC project grant and will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD.  The successful candidate will join a research team in a dynamic and stimulating work environment. Project title: Evaluation of a program to enable older, at risk drivers to stop or limit driving, but maintain mobility. While older driver safety is an area of passionate debate which receives wide attention in the media, there is a lack of objective data on the safety profile of older drivers.  At The George Institute, we are conducting a large randomised controlled trial evaluating a program designed to assist drivers make the transition to not driving.  A key outcome of this trial is safety of older drivers and we will be using in-vehicle monitoring to evaluate driver safety.  Each participant will have a ‘black box’ fitted to their vehicle which will remain in place for the duration of the 12 month research study.  The equipment consists of a C4D Data Recorder with connected External GPS Receiver. The hardware includes an internal 3D accelerometer, tachograph, real-time clock, internal battery (1300mA) and 128MB of flash memory.  Second by second GPS location will be integrated into a database of the road network.  Incident involvement will be estimated from rapid decelerations and augmented by driving diaries.  The associations between driving speed and functional status will be explored.  Anthropometric measurements of trial participants in their own vehicles will be used to model driver ergonomics.

Banting & Best Diabetes Centre (BBDC), University of  Toronto offers graduate award in diabetes research. Graduate awards are available for Canadian students to pursue master’s and PhD program at the University of Toronto or one of its fully affiliated institutions. Applicant must be a full-time graduate student in the Faculty of Medicine. The student must be registered with the School of Graduate Studies by August 31, 2013 in order to receive funding. The award ranges normally between $12,000 and $16,000 for one year.

Scholarship Description: The BBDC was established in 1978 as an Extra-Departmental Unit of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto with the primary objective of advancing diabetes research, education, and patient care. They currently offer several studentships, fellowships, and other support for qualified individuals involved in diabetes research at the University of Toronto and its affiliated institutions. In addition, we host educational events for researchers and diabetes health care professionals. The programs of the BBDC are mainly supported from the income on our endowment. They also receive generous contributions from industry and individuals which fund various research programs for students and fellows.

Duration of award(s): One year beginning on September 1, 2013 and ending on August 31, 2014.

What does it cover? Amount varies and is normally between $12,000 and $16,000 for one year.  The award will be administered in two equal installments payable in September 2013 and January 2014. (Outstanding student fees may be deducted from the January installment.). Students must accept external funding if awarded.  The BBDC will top up external awards to the maximum stipend allowed by the Faculty of Medicine (i.e. $25,401 for M.Sc. students, $27,401 for Ph.D. students) or less if mandated by the regulations of the external funding agency. M.Sc. students who are applying to transfer to a Ph.D. program will be eligible to receive the PhD stipend if they successfully transfer by August 31. Proof of transfer must be provided to the BBDC by this date.

A PhD-student position in Soil fungal ecology is available at the Evolutionary biology center, Uppsala University. Starting date as soon as possible or as agreed upon.

Project description: Fungi mediate biogeochemical processes in soil, including carbon sequestration, organic matter decomposition, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling. Soil fungal communities are immensely diverse and general ecological principles governing these systems remain largely unknown. The planned project will use the complex dynamics of phosphorus in soil as a framework to identify adaptive traits in soil fungi and explore ecological principles that govern the tremendous diversity of soil fungal communities. The research plan for the PhD project will be developed together with the appointed student.

The PhD student will be part of Dr. Anna Rosling’s lab at the Evolutionary Biology Center. The Rosling lab has a broad interest in soil microbial ecology and biogeochemical processes and combine molecular methods with mycological experimental systems. The research environment is international with English being the working language. Qualifications: An MSc or possibly a BSc degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field is required. The ideal candidate is highly motivated with thorough education and strong interest in environmental and comparative genomics and microbial ecology. Previous experience with large-scale genetic data analysis, bioinformatics and mycology is advantageous. Candidates must be fluent in English.

Conditions: The PhD training comprises four years of full time research and studies. The successful candidate will receive a fellowship the first year and a PhD-student position year 2-4. The position can be combined with up to 20% of teaching assistantship, which will then prolong the position accordingly.
