For 2014/2015 academic year, applications are invited for Fulbright Scholar Program. The program is open to US faculty and experienced professionals for pursuing teaching and research in abroad. Approximately 800 teaching and/or research grants are available for a period of two to 12 months, as specified in the award description. The grants are offered in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. The award categories are teaching award, teaching/research awards and research award. Eligibility:
-For academic year 2014-15, there will be no lifetime limits on Fulbright Scholar grants. In addition, there will be no required waiting period between Fulbright Scholar grants.
-U.S. citizenship – permanent residence is not sufficient.
-PhD or equivalent professional/terminal degree (including a master’s degree, depending on the field) as appropriate. Candidates outside academe (e.g., professionals, artists) with recognized professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments are also eligible, as specified in the award description.
-Recent college graduates with limited professional experience and graduate or doctoral students seeking funding to complete their degrees are ineligible for consideration under the Fulbright Scholar Program.
All teaching awards are at the post-secondary level and may vary in experience or discipline requirements, as specified in the award description.
-Foreign language proficiency as specified in the award description, or commensurate with the requirements of the proposed project. (Note: In many world areas, English is sufficient for lecturing.)
-Sound physical and mental health: selected candidates are required to submit a Medical History and Examination Report before their grants can be finalized.
-Grants shall not authorize engagement in pastoral, missionary, or other professional religious activities, or those for which a license to practice medicine or nursing is required.
-Applicants are required to disclose any prior convictions of a felony or a misdemeanor, including Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), but excluding minor traffic violations. The complete FFSB regulations can be found under 626 Ineligibility Factors.

What does it cover? This varies by country and type of award. Check the award description and/or consult program staff responsible for the particular award you are interested in. Some Fulbright stipends are generous while others are less so, depending on the country. However, Fulbright stipends are not intended to approach salaries. Generally speaking, Fulbright grants are budgeted to cover travel and living costs in-country for the grantee and their accompanying dependents. Selection Criteria: As reviewers take into account the basic objectives of the Fulbright Scholar Program, they apply the following criteria:
Professional Qualifications:
-Credentials, training and professional standing.
-Professional excellence, as evidenced through the quality of publications, grants, fellowships, honors, awards, conference papers, exhibitions, compositions, and performances.
-Record of service to the field and the home institution.
Teaching Awards:
-Match of academic, professional or artistic expertise to the award.
-Teaching ability and requisite experience at the post-secondary level, as evidenced by the applicant’s C.V., teaching awards, the quality of submitted syllabi, innovative and effective pedagogical approaches, and/or curriculum projects, and attested to by one of the three letters of reference.
-Quality and feasibility of the proposed teaching project
-Outcomes, potential impact and benefits
Research Awards:
-Intellectual merits of the proposal: rigor of research design and methodology; originality and conceptual sophistication; project’s significance.
-Suitability: relevant and appropriate research experience and expertise to complete the proposed research activity successfully.
-Feasibility in terms of resources available and time allocated to the project.
-Need for residence in host country to accomplish the project.
-Evidence of host institution interest and affiliation, if indicated in the award description.
-Outcomes, potential impact and benefits
Foreign Language Proficiency: Foreign language proficiency as specified in the award description, or commensurate with the requirements of the proposed project.
Personal Qualities: Ability to serve as a cultural ambassador for the United States, including, but not limited to personal attributes of collegiality, cultural adaptability and sensitivity.
Notification: All recommended candidates are forwarded to the J.W. Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for approval. CIES notifies applicants whether they have been selected to receive a Fulbright award. This notification is also emailed. Please let your CIES Program Officer know if your email address changed since you submitted your application.
