Are You Eligible for The Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship?

Native American Scholarship

Every year, one player from NCAA men’s and women’s lacrosse is presented the The Tewaaraton Award, marking them as the player of the year (for a list of past winners of this prestigious award, click here). The Award, now entering its twelfth year, was founded in 2000 at the University Club of Washington DC, and is managed by the Tewaaraton Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to not only recognize the most outstanding male and female collegiate lacrosse players, but also to honor the American Indian heritage of the sport . A huge part of their mission is to “uphold the original purpose of the Award and to provide scholarships to Native American high school seniors in the Iroquois Nation,” as they state on their website. The 2012 Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held May 31st at the SmithsonianNational Museum of the American Indianin Washington, DC.

Below we’ve provided some general information about the Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship, which is presented by US Lacrosse. The deadline for application materials, which has just been extended, is now May 5th.  Please visit www.tewaaraton.comto for the full application!

General Information:

The Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship’s objective is to recognize and reward exceptional students’ academic and athletic achievement. This supplemental award is intended to help Native American lacrosse players of Iroquois heritage. All awards are based on the merits of academic achievement, athletic performance and ambition. Additionally, nominees are asked to articulate what lacrosse means to them as a Native American student-athlete. Since one of the primary goals of the Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship is to honor lacrosse’s Native American roots, the selection committee will weigh heavily on this aspect of the application.

Deadlines:

It is the applicant’s sole responsibility to meet all deadlines. Missing material due to failure by others to meet final deadlines will cause your application not to be processed. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to follow up and ensure that the Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship Committee receives valid documents on or before designated deadlines. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

Awards:

The $5,000.00 scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to one (1) Native American female student and one (1) Native American male student. The selection committees are comprised of past Tewaaraton Finalists, lacrosse coaches and exemplary members of the Native American community. The two winners will be invited to attend the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony and accept their award as part of the celebration in Washington, D.C. on May 31, 2012.
