Ability to analyze and solve open-ended engineering problems and develop simulation methodologies is essential. Knowledge in laser-based measurement techniques, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), C programming languages and Matlab, as well as expertise in chemical reaction engineering is desirable. The candidate is expected to have experience in Chemical Engineering. Effective written and verbal communication skills, time-management skills and ability to work in a team are also important. Scholarship Description: The Department of Chemical Engineering, University College London (UCL) is seeking a Graduate Student for the experimental and numerical investigation of multiphase flows in micro- and milli-fluidic reactors. The aim of the research project is to understand interfacial transport processes and the scale-up of the involved transport coefficients in more detail, and thus to contribute to the efforts in process intensification and the translation from batch to continuous flow processes on the micro- and milli-scale. The experimental characterization is accomplished by identifying the physical mechanisms of heat and mass transfer on the micro- and milli-scale using non-invasive, laser-optical measurement techniques (particle image velocimetry (PIV), laser-induced fluorescence (LIF)). In a second step, these experimental results will be used to validate and develop predictive multiphase flow models for computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Therefore the open-source code Open FOAM will serve as a platform to develop a volume-of-fluids (VOF) based two-phase flow solver, which captures interfacial heat and mass transfer as well as chemical reactions. The obtained results will bridge the gap between the micro- and milli-scale, and will directly impact the efforts in process intensification and sustainable advanced manufacturing.
