1-2 graduate student positions are available at the Institute of Biotechnology in the following projects/labs: Stromal? epithelial interactions in tumour formation / Tomi P. Mäkelä. Successful candidates will have a strong interest in cancer biology, demonstrated ability to carry out outstanding research and interest to join an ambitious international team. The salary is 2100?2600 €/month.
Study Subject(s): Position is offered in Stromal-epithelial interactions in tumour formation.
Course Level: This position is available for pursuing graduate degree level at Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki in Finland.
Scholarship Provider: Institute of Biotechnology, Finland
Scholarship can be taken at: Finland
Eligibility: Successful candidates will have a strong interest in cancer biology, demonstrated ability to carry out outstanding research, and interest to join an ambitious international team.
Scholarship Open for International Students: Finnish students can apply for the position.
Scholarship Description: The projects are integrated to a national project translating new knowledge on the tumour microenvironment to new combinatorial therapies with over a hundred scientists working toward a common goal. As a graduate student at the Institute of Biotechnology you will also have an opportunity for developing transferable skills within a highly dynamic international environment.
The project leverages on our recent discoveries that stromal smooth muscle cells (Katajisto et al, Nat Genet 40, 455?, 2008) and fibroblasts (unpublished) have a critical role in development of gastrointestinal polyps following mutations of the LKB1 tumor suppressor kinas. The project will utilize new in vivo, organoid, and in vitro models to explore the underlying mechanisms including LKB1 substrate kinases and regulators of polarity, metabolism, and the tumor microenvironment. Previous experience in mouse models, signaling, cell/molecular biology, highcontent screening (HCS), or bioinformatics is advantageous.
