Ph D Student in Education, specialising in adult learning
based at the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Learning (www.ibl.liu.se) Division for Studies in Education and Adult Learning (www.ibl.liu.se/pedvux), and the research group in adult and popular education research.
The research group in adult and popular education research focus on adult learning. Adult learning involves a range of activities within different contexts; within institutional arrangements such as municipal adult education, folk high schools and within study associations (study circles), different informal and everyday contexts, or within popular movements and civil society. The research group is the most prominent in this field in Sweden and is responsible for the National Network on Popular Education Research (Mimer), in relation to which one of the positions is connected. The research group has a strong international profile and is amongst other hosting the secretariat of the European Society for Research on the Education of Adults (www.esrea.org), and is also hosting and co-editing the European Journal for Research on the Education and Learning of Adults (www.rela.ep.liu.se).
As part of the further development of the research group, up to four positions as Ph D student are now available to apply for according to the following profiles:
One position is connected to the National Network on Popular Education (Folkbildning) research and the thesis should be related to popular education.
Three positions where the thesis should be directed at studies of adult education or popular education (Folkbildning).

Duties
The available position comprises the position holder to conduct his or her own doctoral education and research within the field of adult learning. The Ph D student should focus principally on training for doctoral work. However, a Ph D student may engage, to a limited extent, in teaching and administration. These latter commitments may not exceed 20 percent of full working hours before the doctoral degree has been obtained.
Qualifications
To be admitted to a doctoral programme the applicant needs to have both a general qualification for admission, and a specialised qualification as outlined below. Further, the applicant needs to have the capacities deemed necessary to be successful in the program.
General qualifications
General qualifications for admission to doctoral education is a degree of advanced level – successful completion of courses consisting of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 credits are of an advanced level, or the applicant may have an equivalent older degree, or the equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways. If there are special circumstances, the Board of the Faculty of Education can grant an individual applicant exemption from the demand of general qualifications.
Specific qualifications
A specific qualification for admission is the knowledge equivalent to 90 ECTS credits within Education or any other discipline or subject matter with relevance to adult learning, of which 30 credits should be at an advanced level.
The demand for the specific qualification can also be seen as fulfilled by those who have an older degree, or who have acquired the equivalent knowledge within our outside the country.
Recommendations of prior knowledge
To successfully complete the doctoral program in adult learning the student needs to have good language skills in English.

Appointment time
The first appointment will be for no more than one year. The appointment can be renewed for a maximum of two year at a time. A Ph D student may be employed during a period not exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years’ full time research.

The starting salary for Ph D students is based on the Department’s salary scale. The starting salary for Ph D students is currently 22300 SEK/month.
